I was reading an article by Alex Pappademas about Keanu Reeves ( don’t care what anyone says, Keanu is still ours).
But Toronto is not what Keanu knew. Said Keanu to writer Dennis Cooper, “Toronto’s a big shopping center now.”
Was he referencing the Crystal Palace of Conspicuous consumption aka Eaton Centre? As it is, I would argue that my hometown could be more hipster supermarket than anything else, that and masses curtained glass towers hiding the fact that nobody can afford to live in them.
But I have not given up on the 6 – and for the record I don’t know any of Drake’s songs. But I do know Buika’s songs – and she’s giving a free concert on Saturday. No way I am going to miss it. As it is I am still kicking myself for missing Janelle Monae’s free concert a few years back.
So perhaps Toronto is the embodiment of the Continental of John Wick’s world: quiet civility hiding an undercurrent of malice. Heaven help us if the people on the streets find a Bowery King or Queen.
